Shiroka Shiroka

DETAILS

  • Shiroka (Area)

Shiroka seems to be mentioned for the first time on September 15, 1621, in a letter of the Albanian bishop and writer Pjeter Budi. At that time, he referred to a center on the lake shore as "Skirosi", but the Albanian researcher of Italian origin, Injac Zamputti, thinks it is about Shiroka. The name itself of this area may come from the Latin word "sirocco" or "scirocco", which means "a Mediterranean wind coming from the Sahara". Another thesis for the name of the locality is that it may originate from the Church of St. Rrok - dear to Venice and consecrated in the second decade of the 15th century (the name Rrok is derived from "rocco", which is thought to be of Persian origin). It is likely that the name "Shiroka" also comes from Slavic, from the adjective šir, širok, which means. According to evidence that has stood the test of time, Shiroka has been inhabited since the Iron Age. It was a small fishing village until the 20th century. As an initiative to turn it into a tourist location in the period between the world wars, merchants from Shkodra built (as a form of gift) the villa of King Zog.

  • Zogaj village (Area)

Zogaj is a small village, located at the foot of the mountain of Tarabosh and by the lake of Shkodra. It is located only 12 km from Shkodra, on the border with Montenegro. Zogaj is considered one of the most beautiful villages of northern Albania and the home of fishermen and artisans. The village of Zogaj until the end of the Second World War was also known for leather manufacturing processing. But in 1946 the department of this activity was closed. Artisans are few in number; they mainly deal with looms and carpet work. Once Zogaj counted 200 houses, while currently there are 70 houses.
