DETAILS
Fico house (Area)
The Fico House is easily distinguished by its yellow colour. Built in 1902, this house serves as a testimony of the evolution of Gjirokastra dwelling, during the second half of the 19th century. The difference is made by the decorations of the interior and exterior. The ornate “musandara” of characteristic houses in Gjirokastra appear quite simply in this house, without numerous carvings and decorations. On the facade we can see some decorative wooden elements, as well as the curved wooden knees that supports the weight of the upper floors of the house. The attic is one of the most unique elements; it stands at the center of the volume, on the upper floor. The painted walls, the decorated ceiling and the natural light coming in from windows are effective in creating a beautiful and unique atmosphere. Another special feature of this house is on its right side: the bridge that connects it with the house next door. The two families, part of the same tribe, wanted to have a connection between their houses, but they could not block the road. So, they built a bridge that rested on a stone vault.
Houe construction (Area)
On the main facade we see two prominent volumes; this type of structure is called “erker” and is often found in Gjirokastra dwellings. “Erker” is constructed by extending beams across the width of the ground floor, and is used to increase the functional area of the upper floors. Wooden walls, called catma, are used to lighten the structure as much as possible. These walls allow greater opening for windows, giving the upstairs rooms more natural light and ventilation.
The fico family (Area)
The Fico family is one of the oldest and most famous in Gjirokastra. Their house was built towards the end of the 18th century and its yellow paintwork and elaborate carving make it unusual. During the World War II, the house was a base for local partisans and, during the Communist period, the Fico family was evicted and their home sub-divided into a printing workshop and apartments. The family returned to their home in 1970. For eight generations, members of the Fico family have had illustrious careers as advocates, doctors, engineers and politicans. Rauf Fico (1881-1944) became Minister of the Interior in the first Albanian government in 1912. Another famous member of the family was Frederik Fico, a well respected doctor and sports commentator. Lule Fico, who married into the family at age 20, lives in the house now. “I remember arriving and being overhelmed by the size and grandeur of the house. My mother-in-law had to teach me how to cook all the Gjirokastra dishes...”
